WHAT you post matters more than WHERE you post.

👋 Welcome back to Content to Commas, your weekly dose of inspiration, intel, and income strategies all related to the content you're already posting.

Instagram’s at it again, and this time it’s with longform video.

This announcement sent me digging into what every platform actually offers right now, and here’s where I landed…

every platform is the same app now.

Keep reading and I’ll show you the chart that convinced me, plus what I’d do about it.

📍 In this issue:

  • how every platform running the same menu now

  • what Instagram's head said about his own bet

  • the order I'd decide things in

Let’s lock in.

This week's sponsor … my YouTube channel

Frameworks you can apply asap.

If you've ever finished one of these issues wishing you could see the thing actually being done, that's what the channel is for.

Every week I take one framework for growing and getting paid from your content and walk through it on screen.

Pause. Rewind. Listen on the go.

A lot of it comes from playbooks I ran at Ralph Lauren, Squarespace, and Kickstarter, now tested on my own business.

Three good places to start:

A new video every week, plus Shorts every day if you only have a minute.

📖 copying each other homework …

9 platforms, 6 formats, and 37 of the 54 boxes are checked.

That's roughly 7 in 10.

Every platform does shortform video and now 8 do longform.

Instagram announced it on October 26 their launching longform video format called “Features”.

What Instagram's head said about it

Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, talked to Colin and Samir for an episode that went up the same day. The videos are horizontal, Instagram calls them Features, and Future Social reports they run up to 90 minutes.

Then he said it flat out. "We're taking a big risk with this long form thing."

… “should this one be a TikTok or a Reel?” …

I promise you that's the wrong question to start with.

Ask what the idea needs to be, a short clip or a long video, and let the platform come last.

🧭 how to think format first, platform second

Don’t get me wrong, the algorithms on all platforms are different.

And it's really the algorithm we should focus on, not so much the platform.

Platforms just inform different levels of community, social norms and engagement patterns.

Think about the people and how they engage on Instagram vs. X vs. LinkedIn.

But I'd actually say format should come before you think about the platform.

THE FORMAT-FIRST ORDER

  1. Pick the job. attention, build trust, or make money?

  2. Pick the format. Clip, carousel, long video, post, or newsletter?

  3. Pick the platform. Where that format meets the people you want?

  4. Adjust for the room. Change the hook, CTA, or caption. Leave the rest alone.

Steps 3 and 4 are the platform side, the part I'm guessing at 30%.

1. Pick the job first

Before you open any app, I want you to decide what this post is being hired to do. Move attention, build trust, or make money.

Pick one, and steps two and three get easy.

2. Pick the format next

Shortform attention is rented and longform builds trust because it's harder to fake.

If you're going long, record it knowing where the clips get cut, because Mosseri's own plan is long videos that also show up as short ones.

3. Pick the platform third

Pick two or three platforms where your people already are and stay there.

can you already make a Reel over 60 seconds that people watch all the way through, as a series, with a trailer that makes people want the longer one?

Honestly, if you can't hold people for 60 seconds, I promise you a 90-minute upload won't fix it.

4. Adjust for the room

Change the first line and the caption for each platform and leave the rest alone, or your content plan turns into a second job.

Take the next idea you have to post, answer steps 1 and 2 before you open any app, and put the format on your calendar.

See you next Saturday,

Brandon
