your followers stopped mattering years ago.
👋 Welcome back to Content to Commas, your weekly playbook for turning content into leverage and income.
During a call with a brand last week, I was asked … "What's your average watch time?"
Not total follower count. Not even engagement rate. Watch time 🤔
That question tells you everything about where distribution went in 2026.
Instagram rebuilt its feed around what people actually finish.
TikTok has ranked on completion for years.
LinkedIn is weighting dwell time on posts and documents.
YouTube never stopped.
That's when I realized I'm not playing the right game.
This issue is about restructuring your content for the watch time economy so the algorithm don’t forget about you or your brand.
📍 In this issue:
Why every platform moved to watch time and shares
The 3 structural changes that keep people
& a bonus PDF doc
Let's get to work!

💭 what I think is happening…
Platforms make money on time spent, not accounts followed.
For years they used follows as the prize for interest. Then interest-based algo’s got good enough that the prize became dead weight.
So they cut the fat.
Instagram now lets users tune what they see, and the feed leans hard on completion and shares.
BUT, this is the best news small accounts have gotten in years.
why?
Because a 2K follower account that holds attention gets shown more than the 200K follower account that doesn't.
📱 Welcome to the “Watch Time Lab”
The goal is to get your shortform video watch time on par with a Christopher Nolan or Marvel movie.
… and honestly, I don't think even I'm there yet. This is something I'm actively improving and one of the primary focuses of my content right now.
But here are the three focus areas we'll focus on together ⬇
1. Open with the ending
I think the old advice was "hook them in 3 seconds."
The new job is promise a payoff they have to stay for, create a format, and balance high interest without clickbait.
"The third one saved my client $40K" beats "here are 5 tips."
It’s less click bait and more so writing an IOU for the viewer that your content will pay.
Put the most specific number or outcome in the first line
Tease position ("the third one"), not just topic
2. Cut the “throat-clearing”
Don't lose people before the video really starts.
Before you hit post, count the seconds before you say something someone would screenshot.
That's your dead zone. That's the spot where people exit.
First 15% of any content = zero setup, all substance
If a sentence doesn't teach or tense, cut it
You want to hit the audience with non-stop value and always assume people are watching this on 2x speed anyway.
3. End the video abruptly
No, I'm serious.
end the video before you think you should.
that's a rule I learned from MrBeast’s team.
when you end the video at the point where people think there's more video, your video will loop seamlessly, increasing your likelihood of 100% watch time and thus people watching your video on repeat.
it's probably the simplest rule in this entire issue, but it's going to give you significantly more engagement & reach.
🎁 You made it to the end & here’s a gift
I'm giving you The Yap Playbook.
I have a private PDF in my Claude that helps me write video scripts called the Yap Playbook.
That doc is the compass for every piece of video content I make.
And now I'm giving it to you.
What's inside:
My four non-negotiables and attention science that every video must need
My hook writing method and scoring system
A retention map for your videos so you understand what's important at second 10 versus second 22
A science and a strategy on how to compress real stories in under 60 seconds or less
A checklist you can print out and tape next to your camera
& the last section is a system prompt.
Drop the PDF into Claude or ChatGPT, paste the prompt, and you have an editor that runs my standard on your scripts.
No form. No opt-in. You're already here.
See you next week, Brandon
