Not everyone building a business chose to.
👋 Welcome back to Content to Commas, your weekly playbook for turning content into authority, consistency, and income.
Two weeks ago, a mentee texted me out of nowhere. Years at an agency. Good company, good title, solid salary. Then gone.
He got dropped into the independent life overnight with bills that don't care about your job status.
& he's not alone.
The job market has been brutal and a lot of people I respect are suddenly figuring out consulting, freelancing, and client work for the first time, not because they wanted to, but because they had to.
This issue is for anyone who didn't choose the independent path but now has to build one anyway.
📌 In this issue:
Why is the job market so trash?!

🔮 THE NEXT WAVE OF FOUNDERS
The next wave of great founders will come from elimination.
There are so many smart people who are now being forced into freelance.
We romanticize entrepreneurship like everyone woke up one day, quit their job, and chose freedom.
For some, they got laid off twice in 18 months and realized the 'safe' path isn't safe anymore.
The average job search used to take 3 to 6 months. Right now, for a lot of people, it's 9 to 12.
Below is a framework on the immediate moves to make if you are now part of the Involuntary Entrepreneurship Club ↓
📚 THE INVOLUNTARY PLAYBOOK
You might be thinking, "I need to build my personal brand."
I'd say … slow down.
The playbook for building from necessity looks different from the 'follow your passion' version. Here's my thoughts…
Step 1: Don't build a brand. Solve a problem for one person.
Revenue before identity. You don't need a logo, a content strategy, or a website on day one.
You need one person who will pay you to solve something they can't solve themselves.
Find that person first. The brand comes later.
Step 2: Sell your skill, not a product.
Consulting. Freelance. Advisory work.
Whatever you spent the last 5-10 years getting good at, someone out there needs it and will write a check for it.
This isn't your forever business model. It's your cash flow resolution. You can worry about scaling later.
what I'm now telling everyone when it comes to pricing is to have no more than three tiers:
A DIY price ($)
A done with you price ($$)
A done for you price ($$$)
it's your version of a good, better, best structure. Make sense?
Step 3: Stop measuring yourself by corporate standards.
At a job, a slow afternoon still feels like productivity.
On your own, a slow afternoon can feel like failure (or at least it did for me for the first 3 months of being an entrepreneur).
but … it's not.
Some days are calm. That's not laziness, that's pacing.
You are not behind. You are just building at a different speed than a system that had you punching a clock.
It took me some time to learn that.
Step 4: Build in community, not isolation.
The loneliest part of this transition isn't the work.
It's having nobody around who gets what the transition actually feels like.
(I'm getting teary-eyed writing this because I know so many people who have told me they feel so alone in this process)
Find one other person in the same spot. Not to network. Not to collaborate. Just to not be alone in it.
The fastest path to replacing your salary isn't a course or a content calendar. It's one conversation with someone who needs what you already know.
If this is you right now, send this to one other person in the same spot.
But one I think I want to leave you with is your corporate experience is an unfair advantage.
You've sat in budget meetings. You've managed up. You understand how decisions actually get made inside companies. Most people starting businesses from scratch have to learn all of that the hard way. You already know it.
Key takeaway … the involuntary entrepreneurs like you often wins because they skip the romanticizing and go straight to the building.
